A Prayer for Teachers
It’s that time of year, when kids are heading back to class or (as has traditionally been the case for my family) hitting the books again at home. I’m all for bathing the new school year in prayer, and toward that end, I’ve published a Back-to-School Prayer to pray over students in the past. But teachers need prayer every bit as much as the pupils under their instruction, so this year, I’m adding A Prayer for Teachers to my collection of free printable prayer guides.
This guide was easy to write. I just included all the things I’ve prayed for myself as a homeschool mom through the years: that God would help me cling to what is right and good, that He’d strengthen me and keep me alert to the individual needs of my children, that I’d approach their lessons with creativity, humility, and resourcefulness, and that He would enable me to live a life before them that would be consistently worthy of their honor and respect.
I hope you’ll find it helpful in praying for the teachers you know, including those who are instructing your children or grandchildren. God bless them! They have such an important job.
A Prayer for the Teacher
Lord, thank you for teachers and for all the important work they do. I pray You will make them:
Tenacious
Help our teachers to hold fast to what is right without wavering, stand boldly upon the truth without backing down, & diligently teach the kids in their class to cherish wisdom & understanding. (Hebrews 10:23; 2 Timothy 1:7; Deuteronomy 6:7; Proverbs 19:8)
Energetic
Strengthen and empower our teachers to go above & beyond what their jobs require. Renew their energy. Build their endurance. Equip them for every good work. Guard them against weariness. (Colossians 1:11; Isaiah 40:31; 2 Timothy 3:17; Galatians 6:9)
Attentive
Keep their eyes & ears open to all that is going on with their students. Give them an extra measure of wisdom & discernment. May they consistently praise good behavior & subdue potential problems. (Matthew 13:16; Proverbs 14:33; 1 Peter 2:14)
Creative
Bless our teachers with sharp, creative, resourceful minds. Supply every need and help them make wise, efficient, & productive use of all the time, talents, gifts, & resources You’ve entrusted to them. (Jeremiah 17:10; Philippians 4:19; Matthew 25:20-21)
Humble
Cultivate in their hearts a spirit of sincere humility. Guard them against pride and arrogance, Help them resist any urge to answer students with impatience, condescension, or biting sarcasm. (Ephesians 4:2; Proverbs 8:13; Colossians 3:12; James 4:6-7)
Encouraging
Help our teachers find effective ways to encourage their students, to build them up, to spur them on to love and good deeds, and to motivate & inspire them to put forth their best effort. (1 Thessalonians 5:11; Philippians 3:13-14; Hebrews 10:24; Hebrews 12:1)
Respected
Show our teachers the inestimable value of a good name. May they live lives of integrity—both in and out of the classroom—and enjoy the respect of their students & colleagues as a result. (Proverbs 22:1; Proverbs 11:3; James 3:1; Romans 13:7)
